  20.     This file is for a little background information on this program that you
  21. took the time to download.  I assume you got a pretty good idea of what it is
  22. used for, but I will include a brief description for the BETA version and
  23. things to look forward to in the full running version. It is a hacker tool (but
  24. I wasn't the one who told you to use it, ok?), It is to help the idustrious
  25. hacker in his endeavors, and save him some cash in the process.  If you still
  26. don't have the foggiest idea of what i am talking about, never fear read on!!

  30.     Tone Generator was written using Turbo Pascal v5.0, for the programmers who
  31. are interested.  It took a lot of phucking around to get it in the shape it's
  32. in.  I am new to TP programming so I am open to all Input.  You can reach me at

  34. improvements etc., you get the idea.

  36.     Tone Generator is used to and by the Phone Phreaker who is familiar with
  37. using tones to get something done. [i.e Make a FREE Phone Call!!]  For those who
  38. may already not know by now, 2600 is a tone that Bell uses to get 'on' and 'off'
  39. the trunk.  For those who have no idea about what a trunk is [No! not part of a
  40. tree or a car! HEHE], I suggest reading any of these fine publications:

  47.    Anyways! This tone is named a 2600 Whistle or more well known, a BLUE BOX,
  48. invented by Capt. Crunch [Bless his heart!]  If you blow the right tone into a
  49. phone you can make the phone think that you have already inserted money in the
  50. machine etc.  These are just a few examples.  But this is an extemely old and
  51. extremely dangerous tone to use.  Thanks to ESS (Electronic Switching System
  52. [duh!]), Bell can now pin point your location, (especially if you use this
  53. thing at home, I DON'T ADVISE DOING THIS!!) your name and anything else they
  54. need in about 7 seconds.  Therefore, use this off a can, lineman's handeset
  55. tapped into someone else's line, or through an extender. Believe me I know, I
  56. used to work for Bell....

  58.     When I speak of "BELL", I'm referring to any phone company in general. Some
  59. payphones use a 2200hz tone, some use the 1700hz.  Bell uses these as
  60. countermeasures against phreakers some use a combination of the two tones.
  61. Used Properly and these can save you a ton because they are in charge of Bells
  62. accounting procedures to check the coin sense relay's of most rural and city
  63. type pay phones.  One can tell if a phone is single or dual by having his
  64. friend call from it.  Have him deposit coins (or slugs!).  The phreaker will
  65. hear the tones and be able to tell.

  68.                HERE IS A BETTER DESCRIPTION OF THE BLUE BOX
  69.                --------------------------------------------
  70.     The Blue Box is an electronic device that simulates the tones generated
  71. during LD (long-distance) phone calls.  Bell still uses in-band signaling in
  72. many places to determine if trunk lines are free. When one dials a LD phone
  73. number (whether rotary or Touch-tone), the CO. interprets the signals dialed to
  74. determine the destination.  It Then searches the relevent trunk lines for the
  75. one that is not busy.  A trunk line is not busy puts out a steady 2600hz tone.
  76. When the CO. finds such a trunk the phone company latches on to it and
  77. terminates the 2600hz non-busy signal; it then sends the called number or a
  78. special routing code to the destination TO.  If the CO. can't find a trunk, it
  79. signals the caller with a 120hz busy signal.

  81.     The tones used to send this information are the Multi-Frequency (MF) tones.
  82. An MF tone consists of two tones from a set of six master tones which are
  83. combined to produce any of 12 distinct tones.  Occasionally, one can hear these
  84. trunk tones, but they are usually filtered out.  These tones are NOT the same
  85. as Touch-Tones.

  88.     As talked about earlier the 1700 and 2200 tones.  These tones in conjuction
  89. can produce what is called a red box.  I don't have all the specs. on the
  90. redbox but will produce further output in future editions. of tonegen along
  91. with my progressing 2600 whistle perfector.
